“The Search for an Ebola Vaccine”

Lecture by MICHAEL DEKLEVA, Ph.D. Executive Director, Regulatory Affairs, Merck & Co. “The Search for an Ebola Vaccine”

In
 2014
and
2015
the
world
witnessed
the
worst
 global
 epidemic
of
Ebola
virus
 disease
 in
history.

More than
 25,000
people
were
infected
and
more
 than
11,000
people
died
from
 this
deadly
 infectious
viral disease
for
which
no
 antiviral
 drugs
or
 vaccines
are
 currently
approved.

Health care
workers
from
 around
 the
 world
conver ged
in
the
West
African
 epicenter
 of
the
 outbreak,
 to
do
 everything
 and
anything
 possible
to
 care
for
 the
sick
and
dying,
and
to
stop
 the
of
spread
of
 disease.

At
the
same
time,
 national regulatory
 authorities,
 health
 policy‐makers,
 and
 vaccine
 manufacturers
scrambled
 to
develop
 a
 vaccine
 that
might
be
 effective
 in
preventing
individuals
from
contracting
the
infection.

This
talk
 describes
 the journey
to ward
development
 of
one
very
promising
 vaccine
 candidate,
which,
 based
 on
early
results
 from
 a
clinical
study
in
 Guinea, was
shown
to
be
100%
effective.
