Lecture: “The HIV Epidemic in Poland” by Andrzej Horban, M.D.

Due to the strong possibility of inclement weather Prof. Horban’s November 7th lecture on the HIV epidemic in Poland at the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences is cancelled.

Dr. Andrzej Horban is a leading figure in the fight against AIDS in his native Poland. He
was among the first to implement measures to combat and treat HIV infection. Dr.
Horban established and directed the AIDS Diagnosis and Therapy Center in Warsaw.
He also helped to train other physicians, many of whom he sent to research and
treatment centers in the United States His activities reach beyond Poland to other
European countries and the United States where he maintains active collaborations.
Dr. Horban serves as Medical Director of the Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Warsaw
and on the faculty of the Warsaw Medical University, Department of Infectious
Diseases. His vast experience includes an M.D. degree from the Medical Academy of
Warsaw and post-graduate degrees in internal medicine and infectious diseases. His
international training includes studies in infectious diseases and epidemiology at Malmo
University, Sweden, at the University of Rouen, France, at Johns Hopkins, at the
Pasteur Institute and at the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at
the NIH.
He has served on more than 50 clinical trials for treatments of AIDS, Hepatitis B and
Hepatitis C infections and served on the Steering Committees of numerous international
clinical studies.
His broad experience has contributed to numerous professional societies including as a
board member of the European AIDS Clinical Society, President and Vice President of
the Polish AIDS Society, member of the Governing Council of the International AIDS
Society and other groups devoted to the study of infectious disease.
