Biography / History

Jozef Wittlin (1896-1976) was a Polish writer, novelist and poet and one of the Polish intellectual leaders in exile. He was born in Dymitrow Estate in Galicia. He was a student at University of Vienna. After completing his studies he was a Literary Director of the Municipal Theater in Lodz. He spent several years in Italy. He was a member of the Pen Club in Warsaw. He emigrated in 1941 to the USA. American Academy of Arts and Letters granted him a literary award in 1943. He was one of the founders of the PEN Club Writers in Exile. Acquisition Note: Gift ca. 1967.

Abstract

The small collection contains correspondence of Jozef and Halina Wittlin with medical and government authorities regarding medical aid for a young Polish poet Halina Poswiatowska. There are also a few typescripts of Jozef Witlin’s poems. Arrangement in Series: Correspondence 1957-1959 (-1967).
